Remaining classes for us-

11/20- No class! That would have been the next time we meet, which means that we will not be meeting for two weeks. You guys better have some sweet progress done on you aluminum projects and blocks.

11/27- Review of your aluminum progress and your block progress, Keep your presentations updated  and make sure the pages have some words on them that explain the photography enough so that the presentations can be understood without you presenting. Demo on bending the tubes for your lamps.

12/4- Blocks due, last meeting before final crit. Review of progress on your aluminum project.

12/11- Final Crit, bring your project, present your project to the class.

lamp tube details-

We will be using 1/2 inch x 1/16 inch wall steel tubing from the RISD 3D store, ask the clerk to help you find it. It costs $2.50 a foot, they will need to cut it for you and sometimes they cannot do it on the spot so plan ahead. You may have questions about how to use it, specifically-

Question- How do I cut it?

Answer- With a hacksaw from the hand tool cabinet (ask monitor) or use the big horizontal band saw that you used to cut your blocks.

Question- How do I attach stuff to it?

Answer- Rivets, tension fits, glue it into a tight fitting hole in your wood base. If you have a question please ask me for advice.

Question- Can I bend it?

Answer- Yes, but with a bender I have not shown you yet. I can show you how to use it next time we meet or I can come in some evening to give those who want to have a bent tube a demonstration. Contact me if you want to learn how to bend the tubing.

 

 

 

1. Block Project- cut your block and file it to length, the ends need to be perfectly flat and square. We will be continuing to work on these for a few weeks, you won’t be graded on your work this week but if you fall behind it may be hard to catch up.
2. Aluminum edge samples- Start working on these, I gave you the worksheet to work off of. Complete one sample before we meet next week. Look up “knife file work” for some inspiration, knife makers tend to go really overboard on this but it should be a good source of ideas if you get stuck. Eventually I want everybody to make 3 nice samples we can contribute to the cabinet.
3. Fix up your posters from class (border, name, organized photos, generally should make sense). Email it to me in the form of a PDF.
4. Experiment with the aluminum sheet, Have 10 or so experiments to review in class.

 

 

I know it is a lot of work, the block and edge samples are not due this week but it is important to get going on them so you don’t fall behind. The poster assignment from last  week shouldn’t take too long to fix up (hopefully). The aluminum experiments are important.

Develop 3 ideas with more studies, Document and present your process, 5min to present in class.

 

We will be reviewing your studies, measuring your cubes, talking about mediums, importance of documentation and some shop demonstrations.
